Forest fires annually destroy forests worth billions and cause immense damage to ecology; carbon sinks become carbon emissions. This strains landowners, the local population, the Rescue services and volunteers. Most recently, in 2018, an estimated 25,000 hectares of forest were destroyed in just one summer at the cost of an estimated SEK 600 million.
MW Group have several solutions and systems with advanced mapping capabilities using high-tech drones and data analysis. This is done by digitizing the forest and using Long-range UAS capabilities combined with advanced sensors and algorithms. This has been highlighted by Sveriges Radio and several other industry outlets.
We believe that by sharing resources, methodology and technology between both the military and commercial sectors, we can fight environmental disasters such as forest fires more efficiently together.
90% of all forest fires are caused by humans. We firmly believe that having strong defence includes the protection of our environment and forests. Utilizing our technology and solutions we can do just that,
says Mikael Karlsson, CEO and founder at MW Group
In Portugal and Finland, we have, together with authorities, come a long way in digitizing the forests. Through a mobile app provided by Arbonaut, which is a part of MW Group, the Finnish Rescue Service can quickly get information about the forest. Advanced algorithms provide an overview of the area, calculate risks, point out risk areas, and possible spread paths for a possible fire and provide information on how to get there with extinguishing equipment should a fire occur.
MW Group and their newly started subsidiary ForestSense hope to begin a mapping of Swedish forests as well, as has been done in other European countries.
